Welding Automation :
In this technology area, it is proposed to design and develop a low cost welding robot with specific intelligence to perform better quality welding considering some of the fitment and welding issues that are normally encountered in fabrication of weldments. Besides, the automation includes fixture engineering, integration of intelligent sensors, optimization of welding sequence and welding parameters and measures that would address variances in fitment of parts that are being welded, ensuring quality as well as productivity in welding.
Prof.B.Vinod , Head of the Robotics and Automation Department is the Principal investigator of this technology. The department has already got a robotics lab that has a capability to design pick and place robot cells and robots with multi degrees of freedom for pick and place applications. The department is also having CNC control and programming ability.
This project would be executed along with two industry partners who would support the design and development from the beginning and would have the IP rights for a period of two years after the successful development of the prototype.
It is also planned to have user industry interface to verify the performance quality and consistency of the prototype to develop the industrial version. Suitable technology transfer documents would also be prepared to enable know how transfer to industry.
